Professional Background
Dr Ng’s extensive psychiatric experience spans multiple impactful roles in Singapore’s mental health landscape, beginning with his service as a military psychiatrist for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). These experiences cemented his commitment to effective care in challenging environments, honing his expertise in crisis intervention, resilience-building, and culturally responsive mental health support.
After his military service, Dr Ng joined Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he served as an Associate Consultant in the Department of Psychological Medicine. His work there focused on consultation-liaison psychiatry, outpatient care, and community psychiatric services, along with pioneering efforts in the hospital’s Assessment & Shared Care Team (ASCAT) programme. During this time, Dr Ng also actively contributed to medical education by teaching medical students and residents.
Dr Ng subsequently transitioned to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), where he took on multiple leadership roles. He served as the consultant in charge of the Child & Adolescent Inpatient Unit, overseeing comprehensive care for young patients with complex mental health needs in a therapeutic and supportive environment. Later, he became the Founding Chief of the Department of Emergency & Crisis Care, where he developed and managed critical hospital services, including the Crisis Response Team and Crisis Stabilisation Unit.
A strong advocate for community mental health, Dr Ng led key programmes at IMH, such as the Assessment & Shared Care Team (ASCAT) and the Aftercare Programme, which provided continuity of care for patients post-discharge.
